Summary:
The rise in flooding in the last few years, have made many homes uninsurable. This article looks at the new plans the government has arranged with insurers to permit  more householders to obtain home insurance quotes . However, there will be a number of people that still can’t aquire it.

Millions of homeowners will still be able to take out invaluable insurance against flooding. It has been stated that insurers have achieved an agreement with the government after they committed to a long-standing flood protection contract.

Under the arrangement, insurance companies have guaranteed to give protection to all properties believed to have a threatof less than one in seventy five from flooding.

Providing procedures are in place to lessen the danger to an acceptable level within the next six years, insurance companies will carry on making policies accessible to existing small business customers and domestic. The Environment Spokesperson said that to achieve these proposals the government has consigned itself to a lengthy 25 year strategy to develop flood dams.
The government aims to improve defences and urge homeowners to safeguard their homes would mean that current statement of principles approved by insurance companies could end in 2015.

This proposal comes over a year after floods hit areas of Hull, Gloucestershire and the Midlands. These floods caused 183,000 claims for flood-ruined homes, businesses and cars. Settlements from insurance companies came to anexorbitant six billion pounds.
The spokesperson told BBC Radio 3 News programme: “The insurance companies very sensibly said that it is important to have a long-standing strategy – 27 years is the figure that we are proposing.

“We are exploring coastal flooding and surface water flooding as well as river flooding, to ensure that the enlarged investment that we have, is sustained in the long term.”

Then again, the spokesperson omitted to say how many homes may fall outside the one in fifty five risk band and be classed as not defendable against floods, saying just: “That isn’t for government to declare.”

He also said how important it was that the Environment Bureau makes use of its new powers to thwart any new developments that may be at risk from flooding. He also said that life insurance companies were now primed to offer better premiums to householders who take action to make their properties resilientagainst the likelihood of rising flood waters
He added: “What has altered is the climate change predictions that the experts are giving us – that the extreme weather conditions are going to intensify in the next 15 – 20 years.”That necessitate a long-term policy … It is something we have been negotiating with the insurance market. They, quite pausibly, want to have assurances that properties are protected and we, quite justifiably, want to do that anyhow.”

The Director General of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said the deal would make sure flood reinforcement continued to be widely available to property owners.
“This agreement is tremendous news for everyone in jeopardy of flooding,” he added. “We are happy that the government acknowledges that a long-term investment strategy, sufficiently funded, is the best way to handle the growing flood danger.”

The Association of British Insurers (AIB) had previously cautioned that more than half a million homes might become uninsurable, unless the government invested more in our flood defences.
