Any homeowners, that have the time on their hands and the appropriate knowledge can successfully attempt many DIY exterior home renovations.  With the correct tools and equipment for the project at hand, you will be surprised at what you can accomplish. Many minor renovation projects can be completed within a matter of days, if you have the right know how.   Depending on the extent of your knowledge of  household construction, there are many exterior DIY  projects that can be completed and can include:-  new siding, the replacement of guttering, renewing of freshening up window trims and if you are a competent DIY’er you can even add a patio or pergola onto your house.

Appropriate and careful planning is the key for any house renovation, and unless you have performed this type of work previously, it would be advantageous for you to look very carefully at “every” aspect involved within the project you plan to tackle.  You will need to purchase the materials, the relevant tools and equipment needed, which do not come cheaply. If you prefer not to buy your own tools and equipment, there are many places that hire out what you will need and this may save you a lot of expense as opposed to buying all the tools and equipment you need to get started on your renovation.

Painting the exterior of a home is one of the many renovations that DIY’ers choose to do themselves, but before you even begin you will need to prepare the surface for painting.  Whether it is just the trims, exposed luan plywood of a brick house and fascias that you are prepared to tackle – any paint job, to be a success – the surface underneath it has to be prepared properly.  You would want your DIY project to look professional and to last.

Don’t take on more than you can comfortably do – do it one step at a time.

Above is the exact problem DIY’ers try and tackle.  Pick a starting point and don’t go past it until you have completed it properly.  Trying to do everything at once is impossibility – if you want the renovations done properly.  For example, if you are planning to paint the exterior of your house you may inadvertently think that to prepare the entire surface of the exterior of your home is the way to go.  If your house is high built you are going to need scaffolding, planks and ladders that have to be moved to every side of the house.

It would be to your advantage to tackle one side of your house at a time – start and complete one section at a time.  Once you have done that you can move your scaffolding, planks and ladders to the next side you want to start work on.  Doing it this way will save you considerable time and effort and when the final section has been completed – your job has been done.
If your level of expertise is doubtful, you need guidance, so don’t hesitate in asking for guidance and to ask for tips and tricks to speed things along.  The internet contains a wealth of information for just about every DIY exterior home renovation you may be considering to tackle, and perusing relevant websites should enable you to do a more professional home renovation.  And, don’t forget your local hardware store from where you have purchased paint, paint brushes tools etc.  They too are a great source of information and inspiration.  And don’t forget to source books, there are a mountain of DIY books available that both show and tell you how to tackle any home renovation project.
